Field note 08 / Modularity
Modular products need a compatibility map
A growing collection of parts is useful only if people can tell what connects—and what will still connect later.
Describe the connection
Cadence’s catalog entry describes magnetic travel capsules. MOB Beauty appears as a modular palette system; Crossrope as interchangeable rope equipment. The shared design question is about connections, not shared parts. Modularity means little to a buyer until the interface and its limits are explained. “Works with” should point to identifiable components.
Make the map visible
A useful compatibility map names the base, the replaceable parts, and any exceptions. If a product has generations or sizes, show those at the moment of selection. Similar-looking components should not force a customer to infer a match. This site does not maintain verified compatibility data, so the linked brand’s current documentation is necessary before buying replacements.
Plan for one lost piece
Imagine losing the smallest necessary component. Can the owner identify and obtain just that part? Does the rest of the system remain useful? Modularity can make selective replacement possible, but that depends on parts actually being offered and documented. A diagram showing disassembly does not establish repairability or ongoing support. Those need separate evidence.
Keep expansion optional
A starter configuration should have a coherent job before the collection expands. Otherwise the initial purchase can become a promise that usefulness arrives only with more parts. List the minimum working set and the optional additions. Then ask whether new modules reduce friction or merely create more decisions and storage. The strongest systems explain both how to grow and when to stop.
