Field note 04 / Concentrates
Concentrates move a step to the user
When a product ships without its final dilution, mixing instructions become part of its physical design.
Follow the missing ingredient
Concentration changes where preparation happens. Blueland’s catalog entry describes dry tablets used with a bottle; Branch Basics is organized around a concentrate. Waterdrop appears in a different category with dissolvable drink cubes. These are not interchangeable products. They share a structural move: the final-use state is completed after purchase.
Instructions become hardware
A fill line, label, or unmistakable pairing between refill and vessel can carry information that would otherwise live in a leaflet. Look at the moment before preparation. Does the user know which vessel to use and where the instructions are? Can the label still be read after repeated handling? The best comparison examines the handoff from packaged product to ready-to-use product, not only the packaged volume.
Do not improvise the recipe
For an actual product, use the brand’s current instructions for dilution, water, storage, and intended use. Never infer a ratio from the relative sizes of a tablet and a bottle. This article compares interface structure only. A cleaner and a drink can illustrate the same abstract pattern while requiring entirely separate handling and suitability decisions.
Count the added decisions
A conventional ready-to-use product may hide preparation upstream. A concentrate can expose it. Write down each decision newly assigned to the customer: vessel, quantity, sequence, waiting, labeling, storage. Then ask which decisions the design makes obvious and which still depend on memory. Reduced shipping bulk, convenience, cost, or impact all need their own evidence; the interface diagram does not prove them.
