Starface

Turn the thing you hide into the thing you wear.

The creative strategy

Starface changes the social role of a pimple patch. Its bright shape can be seen on the face, while Big Yellow makes carrying refills feel like carrying an accessory. Hello Kitty is a precise fit for that idea: a familiar character becomes the patch itself. This is more integrated than putting a licensed logo on a box. It does not make the underlying hydrocolloid chemistry novel.

The work

product · Observed 2026-10-13

Hydro-Stars + Big Yellow

The product pairs yellow star-shaped hydrocolloid patches with a mirrored compact that can be refilled.

Our reading. The case and patch create two display surfaces: an object to carry and a shape to wear. Refillability keeps the character in the routine.

Hello Kitty becomes the patch

Hello Kitty becomes the patch — original brand creative
Sanrio / Starface · Original example

Sanrio introduced the collaboration through an interview with Big Yellow, describing Hello Kitty-shaped Hydro-Stars.

Our reading. Both the product silhouette and the launch voice belong to the character world. The mascot acts as a host rather than a decorative badge.

Black Star expands the visual vocabulary

The help page describes a black colorway using the same hydrocolloid formula and fitting the Big Yellow compact.

Our reading. The recognizable shape can change mood without requiring a different use ritual. Support content reinforces the relationship between patch and compact.

A color extension is continuity, not a separate invention.

What to learn from it

Look for a product that customers conceal. Ask whether a deliberate visible form could give them more control over how they present it.

The trade-off

Collectibility can encourage extra purchases, and visible patches will not suit everyone. Self-expression is observed as a designed option, not measured as a mental-health outcome.

Compare the approach

Glossier ↗

Both extend beauty into identity objects. Starface places the recognizable graphic directly on the face; Glossier Goods puts brand expression on carry items and clothing.

ZitSticka ↗

Useful next category comparison from the catalog: Killa Kit emphasizes a treatment format. No full current campaign review of ZitSticka is claimed here.
