# Is the new shape doing useful work?

A simple test for product novelty: identify the behavior that changes, then identify the burden that comes with it.

## Write the old action as a verb

A form-factor comparison becomes clearer when it begins with an action: pour, carry, apply, store, retrieve. Graza’s catalog entry centers on a squeeze-bottle format, Orbitkey on keys arranged in a swiveling band, and Axiology on paper-wrapped color crayons. Each makes a familiar object worth examining through a different action. The novelty is most meaningful when that action is named.

## Look beyond the reveal

An unfamiliar silhouette can draw attention before it demonstrates a benefit. Ask what the new format changes after the first week. Does it make an often-repeated action easier to understand? Does it move difficulty to refilling, cleaning, setup, or storage? These examples are drawn from the catalog, not a comparative hands-on test. No performance ranking is implied.

## Keep a two-column notebook

On the left, write the task the new form appears to simplify. On the right, write the new work it may introduce. Mark each entry as observed, documented by the brand, or still a question. That separation prevents an attractive photograph from quietly becoming evidence. A strong critique can leave cells blank and specify what would be needed to fill them.

## Choose the right comparison

Compare the product against the routine its intended user already has, not an exaggeratedly awkward alternative. A key organizer should be examined with the relevant keys and retrieval habits; a dispensing format with the intended use and storage. The result need not be a winner. A clear account of who benefits, under which conditions, is a more useful conclusion than “innovative” on its own.

## Try this on paper

What repeated verb does the design improve—and what new verb does it ask the owner to learn?
