# Designing a refill system

A reference shortlist for the interface, replenishment loop and responsibilities of the user.

## What should a product designer study before designing a refill?
Use these examples to compare a case-and-cartridge system, a compact, a tablet-and-bottle routine, a carton refill and modular palettes. The design question is how the repeat purchase connects to the permanent object.

## Before you choose
- Sketch the container-to-refill interface and what prevents an incorrect fit.
- Map opening, emptying, cleaning, refilling and disposal as separate steps.
- Record which claims need supplier evidence, testing or lifecycle analysis.

## Tradeoff
An elegant starter kit is only one moment. The refill package, instructions, regional supply and end-of-life route belong in the same design brief.
